Supplies

Choosing the right cleaning products and tools can make all the difference when keeping your motorbike in shape. It is important that when purchasing cleaner, you only buy products that are designed to clean motorbikes, as other harsher cleaners may damage your bike!

A sponge is the obvious cleaning device. However, it can be useful to opt for a sponge that will not pick up grit- as grit in your sponge could scratch your bike.

To dry your bike, a towel or flannel will work fine to get the bulk of the water off. In addition to this, however, you may opt for a chamois cloth to remove the remaining water, as these are safe for all surfaces.

A microfiber cloth will pick up any remaining lint and really make your bike shine!

Prepare your bike

It is important to make sure your bike has cooled down before cleaning. If you have just ridden your bike you need to let the engine completely cool before you start to clean it. A sudden change in temperature from cold water can cause the metal to become damaged, so let your bike cool down naturally.

Although your bike is pretty water resistant, you might consider plugging your exhaust while cleaning to keep the water out. A towel or rag will get the job done.

Cleaning procedure

1. Rinse your bike down

An initial rinse before the sponge even touches your bike is essential to rinse away large chunks of dirt or grit, so that it doesn’t scratch your bike when you start soaping it up. Spray down your bike with a spray cleaner, following with a rinse with water before you start scrubbing.

2. Gently suds up your bike

Give your bike a gentle wash down with a sponge and cleaning solution, working from the top down. Again, make sure the cleaner you choose is designed for cleaning your bike’s surface.

Frequently rinse your sponge to get rid of any grit or dirt so you are not rubbing anything abrasive on your bike, and make sure to change the water frequently.

Where you are likely to get water on your bikes chain and brakes which is fine, these should not be scrubbed using a sponge, as the lubrication on the chain is what causes it to work properly.

After drying your bike, it is a good idea to re-lubricate your bike chain to keep it working properly!

3. Rinse your bike down

Rinse your bike down with clean water after washing to get rid of any suds.

4. Dry your bike

Water should not be left on a motorcycle, as water left in the crevices can cause corrosion over time. Therefore, the motorcycle should be dried by hand right after washing. For this, you can use a towel or flannel to remove the bulk of the water.

Or, if you have a leaf blower or something similar, you can use this to dry the bike relatively quickly.

Following this initial drying with a chamois cloth can really help to remove the remaining water.

Finally, turning on the engine after drying and allowing the engine to heat up can help the remaining water evaporate. Just remember to unplug the exhaust.

It is important to test the brakes before riding. They may take a few pumps to return to regular performance post-wash.

And that’s about it! Remember, bikes are made for riding. So, no matter how clean your bike is now, don’t be afraid to get back out onto the track!

Before you begin:  It’s a good idea to get a feel for the terrain you will encounter on a dirt bike. If you own a mountain bike, we recommend taking it for a spin on the dirt!

Positioning your body on the bike

Sit towards the front of the seat

A dirt bikes centre of gravity lies above the motor. Here, you can control how your weight is distributed and keep the bikes front wheel grounded.

Squeeze the fuel tank with your knees

It is important to squeeze the sides of the bike with your knees, especially when in standing position. This is because it helps align your body position, which increases overall control over the bike.

Have your elbows up and out at right angles

Remembering to keep your elbows up is probably the most important body position to maintain. Having your elbows at a 90-degree angle or above is best. Extending your elbows and allowing them to be parallel to the handlebars will give you full control over the dirt bike.

If your elbows are by your side, you will lack the control over the dirt bike necessary to navigate obstacles. Keeping your elbows up will engage your biceps, shoulders and forearms, giving you full control.

Put the balls of your feet on the footpegs

The back brake can be difficult for a new rider to get used to, especially if you are stepping off a mountain bike and onto a dirt bike.

Keep the balls of your feet on the footpegs and slide your feet forward, just enough to reach the shift lever and the back-brake lever.

Your right foot should be close enough that you do not need to pick up your foot. This can cause you to catch the brake which can cause you to skid.

Try not to have the left foot too far forward so that you don’t upshift and downshift accidentally. Your foot should be just forward enough to upshift and downshift through the gears.

Choosing the right gear

 It normal for many new riders to have trouble deciphering which gear to be in, but it will become more natural as you get a feel for your bike. Take the time to learn the characteristics of your bike. Learn the points where your bike revs out and needs to change up, as well as how to change to the correct gear, especially going into and out of corners.

Most riders will be familiar with engine characteristics and know roughly when they need to change gear. Listen to your engine to help guide you. If you can’t accelerate in the gear you are in, you need to change gear!

Patience

 A good way to learn to control your balance is to manoeuvre the bike slowly in a figure eight. The centre of gravity is right below the seat where the frame sits around the engine. You can practice this to improve your control and practice the body positions discussed above.

Read the terrain

 The terrain you will encounter riding a dirt bike is not consistent, and a dirt bike will handle differently on gravel to sand, or after rainfall. Learning to read the terrain takes experience and judging the stopping distance required for each terrain should be learned slowly.

 Accidents happen!

Riding a dirt bike is by no means an easy sport. You are guaranteed to drop your bike, slide off, lose your balance etc. As long as you are wearing your protective gear, these trials and errors are just a natural part of the learning process!

OTG GOGGLES

OTG goggles are required for riders that wear prescription glasses, so that prescription eyewear can be comfortably worn underneath.

Replacement Lenses – It’s a good idea to carry replacement lenses in your kit bag in case it gets scratched. You should also consider carrying a shaded lens for when it’s sunny on dry tracks.

Boots

After your helmet, boots are the most important piece of equipment. A good pair of boots can be the difference between a continued race and a broken ankle.

Make sure your boots fit comfortably to improve riding ability and prevent injury.

Clothing/Race Kit

There is a huge range of lightweight, durable and athletically cut race gear available to keep you looking the part. We recommend wearing MX race or Enduro kit for off-roading.

Jerseys, as well as looking cool, provide an additional layer. They often have long sleeves to protect from sunburn on hot days. Make sure jerseys don’t fit too loosely so they don’t get caught or pulled when riding.

Pants provide the required range of motion as well as extra grip.

They often have a leather coating on the knees- this protects the knee from rubbing against the dirt bike and also offers protection from the exhaust pipe. MX pants are typically shorter so that boots can easily fit over.

Gloves

Your hands play an important role when riding, and a good pair of gloves helps prevent abrasions, cuts, bruises and burns along with improving grip.

Padding helps to lessen the vibration you feel in your hands, allowing you to ride longer and with more control.

Including gloves if you are buying racewear can often allow you to get them discounted.

Elbow Guards

A good pair of elbow guards can protect your arms from debris and reduce damage to your arms during a fall or crash.

They are an easily forgotten yet important piece of equipment.

Knee Guards/Knee pads

Knee injuries are common in any sport, and riding is no exception. The use of knee pads is strongly recommended.

Knee pad sleeves can be worn underneath the guards. They are a good option if you find kneepads uncomfortable as it prevents them rubbing against your knee.

Hand Guards

Handguards are another piece of highly recommended equipment.

They not only protect your wrists and hands from fractures and crushed fingers after a fall, but they also deflect branches and provide protection from cold winds.

Body Armour

Body armour offers protection from severe falls and shields your body from flying debris.

MX body armour ranges from under-jersey style vests that are light weight, to heavy-duty protective armour.

There’s a large amount of body armour available for dirt bike riders, make sure it’s well ventilated and fits well.
